This text stands in an intermediary position between the Saṅgītaratnākara and the later medieval works such as the Nartananirṇaya. While epitomizing the Indian phenomenon of an adherence to certain key fundamentals, it unfolds and reveals many processes of interaction and focuses attention on particular aspects of form and technique. It is also an important text for the change it reflects in understanding the Rāgas and Rāginīs assigning gender and visualizing an iconography.

In the Āgamas, there are the major streams of the Śaiva, the Vaisnava and the Śākta traditions. Among these the Śaiva literature is extensively known by its familiar division of Kashmir Śaivism and Śaiva Siddhānta.
The Svāyambhuva-Sūtra-Saṁgraha belongs to the Śaiva Siddhānta stream and is a portion of the thirteenth Mūla Āgma dealing with Vidyāpāda. The chapters deal with four principal concerns of the Śaiva Siddhānta, namely the nature of the bound soul (Paśu); the bondage (Paśu); God’s power of grace ( anugraha Śakti); and the path of liberation ( adhvan). From these goals the text moves on to describe the methodologies of attaining the final goal through the elaborate rite of dīkṣā.
Sadyojyoti, the ancient-most acarya of this tradition, has commented upon this rite in detail. The text assumes importance for the concurrent levels of philosophic discourse and process of worship.

The emerging vision of society is one of polyphonic concert punctuated by recognizable gestures. What we see is a “performing society” that generates public opinion not necessarily through rational verbal arguments and dialogues but also through gestures, genres, frames, versions, performances, stories, narratives and codes.
It is precisely in this context that folklore studies reveal how communities break hierarchies, articulate aspirations that are political and otherwise, constitute new identities, establish inter-cultural contacts and undergo changes through cultural borrowings. As identities are constantly created and recreated, what we encounter through folklore is a complex cultural phenomenon not necessarily rational but in alignment with the logic of the cultures concerned. Such processes do create and influence public opinion.
This collection of papers presented in a symposium ogranized in New Delhi in 2002 aligns three sociological categories – folklore, public sphere and civil society in relation to each other in order to capture social and cultural dynamics.
