  निर्मल कुमार बोस बचपन से ही अपने चारों ओर के परिवेश के प्रति सजग थे और बहुत कुछ जानने को उत्सुक भी । अपने पिता की भाँति उन्हे भी डायरी लिखने का शौक था और यही डायरी आज एक अनमोल धरोहर बन गई है । इस डायरी में समाविष्ट भिन्न-भिन्न स्थानों और समय के विभिन्न अनुभव, एक चतुर चितेरे की सूक्ष्म दृष्टि और संवेदनशील ऋदय की अनुभूति से हमें परिचित कराते है।

  मन मस्तिष्क हमेशा खुला रखने के कारण कृत्रिमता और अंग्रेजियत भरे शहर के माहौल में उन्हे घुटन-सी महसूस होती थी और तब वे आश्रय लेते थे प्रकृति की गोद में । वहाँ प्रकृति के लाडले, भोले-भाले आदिवासियों के बीच उन्हे कितनी शांति मिलती थी, यह उनकी डायरी के पन्ने बताते है । इस डायरी को पढने के बाद ही हम जान पाते हैं कि जाहिल और गँवार समझे जाने वाले अनपढ आदिवासियों के बीच रहकर किस प्रकार लेखक को जीवन के सत्य, दर्शन और सार्थकता का अनुभव हुआ।

  आपात-दृष्टि में डायरी में लिखी उनकी प्रत्येक सत्यकथा साधारण प्रविष्टि मात्र लगने पर भी हमें जीवन के कुछ कडवे, कुछ मीठे सत्यों के सम्मुख ला खडा करती हैं।

  सच्चे अर्थों मे एक मानववादी, मानवशास्री ‘परिव्राजक’ के जीवन भर के संचित अनुभवों का भण्डार है यह डायरी।

  निर्मल कुमार बोस, (१९०१-१९७२) कलकत्ता में जन्मे और पले-बढे । उन्होने कलकत्ता विश्वविद्यालय से स्नातकोत्तर शिक्षा और शोध कार्य करके अपनी प्रतिभा की छाप छोड दी थी । बहुमुखी प्रतिभा के धनी निर्मल कुमार बोस इतिहास, राजनीतिशास्र, स्थापत्यकला एवं भाषाओं के साथ-साथ मानवशास्र के भी विद्वान थे । आपने अपनी शिक्षा का उपयोग अन्य विद्वानों की तरह मात्र शोध-प्रबन्ध लिखने और उपदेश देने में नही किया, वरन् मानव-जीवन के बाद भी समय और अवसर निकालकर पुराने कलात्मक मन्दिरों की स्थापत्यकला का सूक्ष्म निरीक्षण किया और अनेक पुस्तकों में अपने ज्ञान के भण्डार को आने वाली पीढयों के लिए सँजोकर रखा ।

  स्वतन्त्रता संग्राम के समय गांधीवादी विचारधारा से प्रभावित होकर आपने गरीबों, असहायों की सेवा की और जन-चेतना को जाग्रत किया । हिन्दी-अंग्रेजी एवं बांग्ला में प्रकाशित उनकी पुस्तकों से उनके रुचि-वैविध्य के बारे में ज्ञात होता है ।

  प्रकृति से जिज्ञासु, पर्यवेक्षी और घुमक्कड होने के कारण उनको सर्वाधिक प्रिय था-ग्रामीण अंचलों में घूमना और आदिवासियों की सभ्यता-संस्कृति, उनकी बोली, उनकी सामाजिक-आर्थिक-धार्मिक आस्थाओं, विश्वासों-अंधविश्वासों आदि का सूक्ष्म पर्यवेक्षण करना । प्रकृति उन्हे जितनी प्रिय थी, उतने ही प्रिय थे प्रकृति की गोद में पलने वाले निरीह आदिवासी, जिनके सरल और अकृत्रिम जीवन तथा सहज-स्वभाव के आकर्षण ने निर्मल कुमार बोस को ‘परिव्राजक’ बना दिया था।

  Often they are uniquely human experiences which embarass ecclesiastical authorities. As a pilgrimage tradition evolves, sacred sites may become formalized in organized socio-political systems with economic overtone. Even in these structured situations, individual people may still have powerful individual experiences. Eventually a pilgrimage tradition may be taken over by religious and political authorities, lose spontaneity, and become frozen in time. But even in these situations, in which large numbers of people may gather, there is a tremendous amount of “primal” energy in which innovations and visions may be evoked.

   

  Using case-studies from pilgrimages around the world, the volume explores the ways many of these traditions have started and evolved. A common perspective is that of self-organization of complex structures in space and time.

   

  The variety of pilgrimage described in the book is remarkable. The subcontinent of India is the location of many sites such as the temples to the nine planets in Tamil Nadu, the pilgrimage circuits of Varanasi, early Buddhist pilgrimages in Sāñcī and Bodh-Gayā, the great ruined city of Vijayanagara, those associated with the Riimiiya1Ja, and the death ceremonies at Gayā. Beyond India, the self-organization and stability of pilgrimage systems are analysed for pilgrimages in Nepal (Kathmandu), Japan, Mexico, the Caribbean, Peru, Norway, and the US.

Kothari, at the very outset of an enlightening talk about three years ago — lead us to one of the mankind’s universal concerns: Prakriti: a Sanskrit equivalent of Nature, in its broadest connotations.

  Ever since man’s first conscious awareness of the phenomena of nature around him, and yet more of his indispensable dependence in primal elements (bhutas/mahabhutas), Prakriti has evoked varying responses in science, philosophy, religion, arts, and in civilizations as far apart as Egyptian, Chinese, Greek and Indian — permeating expressions through the written or the oral words, generating a language of myth and symbol which communicates across cultures.
