At the north-west corner of the prākāra is a beautiful temple of Subrahmaṇya built in 16th century by the Nāyakas. It is an excellent model of Nāyaka architecture with attractive basements and sculptures. A six faced Subrahmaṇya is enshrined inside. The dvārapāla guarding the entrance of the temple are of fine workmanship.
The Maṇḍapa preceding the temple is a Nāyaka structure of 17th century but it was open on the sides originally. The sides were walled up in 1800 CE by Serfoji.
Portraits of the Marāṭhās who ruled Tanjavur in the chronological order are painted on the walls inside. Interestingly, the series begin with Shivaji the great. The names of the portraits are inscribed both English and Tamil. They were painted around 1855 in the time of Shivaji the last of the rulers.
