Suniti Kumar Chatterjee Memorial Lecture<\/h3>\n

\"suniti_kumar_chatterjee\"<\/strong>Prof. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee\u00a0(1890-1977) a philologist of international repute and a litterateur of very high order, studied and researched in Indo-European Linguistics, Origin and Development of Bengali Language, Slav and Austro-Asian linguistics in London University, UK and Sorbonne University in France. he obtained the degree of D. Litt. of the London University. He knew at least three dozens of languages, ancient and modern, Indian and foreign. Besides his eminence as a linguist, he was a specialist of Bengali Literature, tribal culture of Indian, art and culture of Asia. A prolific writer in English, Bengali and Hindi, some of his well known works are:\u00a0origin and Development of Bengali language<\/em>\u00a0(in English),\u00a0Bangla Bhashatattver Bhumika<\/em>\u00a0(in Bengali),\u00a0Bharat Sanskriti Kirata Janakriti<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Aryabhasa aur Hindi<\/em>\u00a0(in Hindi). He accompanies Rabindranath Tagore to the Far Eastern countries and recorded his experiences of the great cultural heritage of the area in his delightful work in BengaliDvipamay Bharat<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Prof. Chatterjee also held many important positions. he became the National professor in 1964. He was appointed Chairman of the Sanskrit Commission, constituted by the Government of India in 1956. In that capacity he compiled a Report which is both a literature and a history. He was also the President of the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, Calcutta during 1961 and the President of the Sahitya Akademi, 1968-1972. Prof. Chatterjee was legend of his time because of his encyclopedic knowledge, a photographic memory and avid curiosity about human civilization.<\/p>\n

The Memorial Lecture has been introduced in honour of this eminent philologist and connoisseur of art.<\/p>\n

\nProf. Sugata Bose, Gardiner Professor of History at Harvard University, USA , is speaking on Prof. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee\u2019s work and his monumental collection in the IGNCA. Prof. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee had been a multidisciplinary scholar, philologist, a connoisseur of art and a confluence of world culture. Prof. Bose has studied at Presidency , Kolkata and Cambridge and then taught and worked in the United States since the mid 1980s. He is also a Member of India\u2019s Parliament from the Jadavpur Constituency in West Bengal<\/p>\n
