The Scheme seeks to explore the historical processes through which ideas, philosophies, religions, languages, literature, art, architecture, knowledge systems, trade networks, technologies, and shared cultural traditions travelled across regions, creating enduring civilizational connections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Scheme adopts an interdisciplinary approach by integrating archaeological, historical, literary, epigraphic, linguistic, anthropological, and digital humanities research to reconstruct these shared cultural landscapes. It aims to bring together scattered global resources, archives, manuscripts, inscriptions, museum collections, and contemporary scholarship on a common platform, making them accessible through collaborative research and digital documentation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unlike initiatives confined to maritime heritage alone, the Brihattar Bharat Scheme encompasses both maritime and overland cultural interactions across East Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, West Asia, South Asia, the Indian Ocean world, the Girmitiya countries, and other regions connected with Bharat through centuries of cultural exchange. By fostering international partnerships and interdisciplinary scholarship, the Scheme seeks to preserve shared tangible and intangible heritage, strengthen cultural diplomacy, and promote a deeper understanding of Bharat&#8217;s enduring contribution to global civilization.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Vision<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To establish a globally recognized platform for research, documentation, preservation, and dissemination of the shared civilizational heritage between Bharat and the world, while strengthening academic collaboration, cultural diplomacy, and mutual understanding through the study of transnational cultural linkages.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Countries Covered Under the Project <\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>East Asia: China, Japan, Mongolia, Taiwan<\/li>\n<li>Southeast Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam<\/li>\n<li>Central &amp; West Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, United Arab Emirates<\/li>\n<li>South Asia and Girmitiya\u2019s: Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and 05 Girmitiya Countries (Mauritius, Trinidad Tobago, Fiji, Suriname, South Africa).<\/li>\n<li>European and other countries: Russia, Azerbaijan and Egypt will be covered under the scheme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Aims and Objectives<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Conduct joint research and academic programmes by engaging global experts in history, culture, art, language, literature, transnational epigraphs, and anthropology.<\/li>\n<li>Joint Documentation of shared intangible transnational heritage, epigraphs, Cultural sites, museums, archives, libraries and lifestyle in collaboration with foreign institutions\/ universities.<\/li>\n<li>Joint Publications (Bilingual) of researched Monographs, Articles, Journals, Films, Documentation, Newsletters, and Survey reports.<\/li>\n<li>Identification Of Shared Cultural Sites for Joint UNESCO Nominations and ICH lists.<\/li>\n<li>Conservation of Transnational Shared Intangible Cultural Heritage.<\/li>\n<li>Promote the dissemination of knowledge through Outreach Programmes and contribute to the Indian Knowledge System (IKS) and vice versa.<\/li>\n<li>Training programmes and creating transnational scholarships in the subject.<\/li>\n<li>Mutual Collaboration with relevant international institutions, universities, archives, and libraries.<\/li>\n<li>Foster cultural linkages between India and partner countries for mutual benefit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Publications and Research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Scheme is presently engaged in multidisciplinary research on the historical and contemporary cultural linkages between Bharat and various regions of Asia and the world. Research focuses on archaeology, epigraphy, manuscripts, literature, languages, art, architecture, religion, philosophy, performing arts, and shared intangible cultural heritage. The findings are being disseminated through scholarly publications, research monographs, edited volumes, exhibition catalogues, journals, policy papers, and digital documentation.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Post Graduate Diploma in South East Asian Studies (PGDSEAS)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since the academic session <strong>2023\u20132024<\/strong>, the Brihattar Bharat &amp; Area Studies Division has been conducting the <strong>Post Graduate Diploma in South East Asian Studies (PGDSEAS)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The programme is designed to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of the historical and contemporary cultural interactions between Bharat and Southeast Asia. It introduces students to the region&#8217;s shared civilizational heritage and examines the processes through which Indic traditions interacted with indigenous cultures to create distinctive yet interconnected cultural identities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The curriculum explores diverse dimensions of the common cultural heritage, including trade and maritime networks, art and architecture, Indian Knowledge Systems, philosophy, literature, religion, languages, socio-cultural traditions, and historical interactions. Particular emphasis is placed on the enduring influence of the foundational Indic narratives\u2014the <strong>Ramayana<\/strong>, <strong>Mahabharata<\/strong>, and the <strong>Puranas<\/strong>\u2014which continue to shape the cultural imagination and shared values of the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The programme aims to equip students, researchers, and professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the common cultural heritage of India and Southeast Asia while promoting academic dialogue, research, and international collaboration in the field.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Future Roadmap<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Scheme proposes to expand its activities through collaborative international research, field documentation, digital repositories, publications, documentary films, workshops, seminars, lecture series, national and international conferences, academic exchange programmes, capacity-building initiatives, thematic exhibitions, and the preparation of transnational UNESCO nomination dossiers.
