Vai\u1e63\u1e47avism has given rise to two very important schools of ritual and philosophy – Vaikhanasa and P\u0101\u00f1car\u0101tra.
\n \u012a\u015bvarasa\u1e41hit\u0101 is an important text of the P\u0101\u00f1car\u0101tra school of Vai\u1e63\u1e47avism.<\/p>\n

Whereas Vaikhanasa is relatively archaic in character and leans more upon the Vedic tradition for its repertoire of mantras used in religious rites and ceremonies, the P\u0101\u00f1car\u0101tra is more liberal and open in its approach. It has a text tradition going back to some 2,000 years-which has also been the main source of the Vi\u015bi\u1e63\u1e6d\u0101dvaita philosophy of R\u0101m\u0101nuja (eleventh-twelfth century). In most of the Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava temples in south India, especially in Tamil Nadu, worship is conducted in accordance with the prescription of one of the important P\u0101\u00f1car\u0101tra Sa\u1e41hit\u0101s.<\/p>\n

The \u012a\u015bvarasa\u1e41hit\u0101 is an important text of the P\u0101\u00f1car\u0101tra school and is followed meticulously for the conduction of daily P\u016bj\u0101 ceremony and performances of various religious festivals in the N\u0101r\u0101ya\u1e47asv\u0101m\u012b temple of Melkore. It can safely be dated to eighth-ninth century at least on the basis of its reference in the \u0100gama Pr\u0101m\u0101\u1e47ya of \u015ar\u012b Y\u0101mun\u0101c\u0101rya. It is supposed to be a simpler and smaller version of the older S\u0101ttvata-Sa\u1e41hit\u0101 of this school which is the earliest available work of P\u0101\u00f1car\u0101tra and is considered as one of three ratnas Uewels), along with Pau kara\u00ad and Jay\u0101-Sa\u1e41hit\u0101s. In twenty-five long Adhy\u0101yas the \u012a\u015bvarasa\u1e41hit\u0101 describes in great detail the rites, rituals and ceremonies taking place (or ought to take place) in a Vai\u1e63\u1e47ava temple.<\/p>\n

Palm-leaf manuscripts of the \u012a\u015bvarasa\u1e41hit\u0101 were procured mainly from the N\u0101r\u0101ya\u1e47asv\u0101m\u012b Temple of Melkore for the sake of authenticity. We have also appended to the text the gloss of A\u1e37asi\u1e41ha Bha\u1e6d\u1e6da (early nineteenth century) which shall be helpful in comprehending certain difficult or sectarian expressions. The English translation on the opposite (right) page has been provided for the facility of the modern scholars working on philosophy, ritual and iconography oVai\u1e63\u1e47avavism.<\/p>\n

A proper understanding of ritual is obviously indispensable for the study of art.<\/p>\n
