The Pu\u1e63pa-S\u016btra is one of the major ancillary works in the S\u0101man technical literature attributed to the Kauthuma and R\u0101\u1e47\u0101ya\u1e47\u012bya schools. It deals with the S\u0101man melodies and their structure. The term pa, in the present context, means t syllabic expansion that takes place when a melody is formed out of a verse. The Pu\u1e63pa-S\u016btra was written long after the S\u0101man melodies had been developed.<\/p>\n

It is difficult to fix the exact date of the Pu\u1e63pa-S\u016btra. There were additions to the original nucleus, like the vikalpas (alternatives), remaining bh\u0101vas, the detailed treatment of prast\u0101va and the first two prap\u0101\u1e6dhakas. Its present form of having ten prap\u0101\u1e6dhakas is a great help to the scholars working in the field of the study of S\u0101mavedic chants. The explanation of the technical terms provided in this edition could also be of great help to the readers.<\/p>\n

The present edition prepared by G.H. Tarlekar who was a living authority on the science of S\u0101man-chanting, contains the accurate text in Sanskrit with English exposition bringing out all the intricate points discussed in the S\u016btras in a highly technical language. This important text on the S\u0101man-chanting has been exposited in English in this edition for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
