The R\u0101galak\u1e63a\u1e47am was composed by Mudduve\u1e45ka\u1e6damakhin in Tanjore in the early eighteenth century CE. It is an important text of Karnataka music and appeared in an effervescent epoch in the development of this music system of which it deals only with r\u0101ga.It collects, classifies, codifies and characterizes the entire music base of the Indian peninsula. The author was a musician, musicologist and music composer of high order. His contribution to the world of music is twofold; systematization of the theory of r\u0101ga content of his times and creating music to crystallize the character and scope of each r\u0101ga described.\n <\/p>\n

The author derived his inspiration from his great-grandfather, Ve\u1e45ka\u1e6dmakhim who revolutionized the theory and practice of Indian music through his scheme of seventy-two melas. His Caturda\u1e47\u1e0d\u012bprak\u0101\u015b\u012bk\u0101 illustrates the four fun dam en tal components ( da\u1e47\u1e0d\u012b of music-g\u012bta, \u0101l\u0101pa, \u1e6dh\u0101ya and prabandha, which his paramaguro (teacher’s teacher) Tanappa postulated and illustrated. His own guru was his father Govindad\u012bk\u1e63ita who made the first da\u1e47\u1e0d\u012bs in practice in his Sa\u1e45g\u012btasudh\u0101.<\/p>\n

Thus a line of four important musicians\u00ad musicologists-composer of south India – T\u0101napp\u0101, Govindadi\u012bk\u1e63ita, Ve\u1e45ka\u1e6damakhin and Mudduve\u1e45ka\u1e6damakhin -built up or reorganized a textual tradition which supported a living dynamic tradition of performed music in which hundreds of composers, thousands of performers and countless listeners endeavoured to continuously strengthen and nourish it.
