Description: |
A copy of one of nine existing Hahae Pyonsin-kut masks in South Korea; the originals date from the 11th-12th century. With hooked nose and large nostrils, this wealthy landowner conceals a vain nature beneath his jolly expression. The mask changes expression dramatically with the tilt of the head: with head tilted up, the mask appears to be laughing; looking down, it takes on a somber expression. The Yangbans vanity and foolishness are satirized in the course of the dance drama. |
