Description: |
A copy of one of nine existing Hahae Pyonsin-kut masks in South Korea; the originals date from the 11th-12th century. The mask is worn by the foolish servant of the Sonbi, or scholar. The distorted expression gives indication of his simple-mindedness. The lower jaw is missing. By legend, the carver of the orginal mask never got around to carving it before meeting an untimely death through a romantic intrigue. |
