Description:

A copy of one of nine existing Hahae Pyonsin-kut masks in South Korea, dating from the 11th-12th century. The Kaksi, or Bride, collects contributions from the audience at the start of the performance as representing of the local goddess, and is married at the end of the procedings. The small eyes are said to indicate shyness; the then lips a lack of chatter. Her hair is in a bridal coif and the face depicted as powdered and rouged. Comic simulation of sexual intercourse with a volunteer from the audience is said to console the goddess, who died a virgin at seventeen, as well as to encourage healthy crops.
