Description: |
The last mask of the pengelembar is usually that of the Tua, or old man. Though interpretations vary in dignity, whimsy and strength, the Tua is an aged courtier who is prone to distractions from head lice, loss of breath, perspiration, or the sight of stray dogs and children in the audience. He has long ago lost the ability to sustain the virtuosic movement of his warrior predecessors and sometimes stumbles, lurching towards or into the audience. By turns comically incompetent and a figure of pathos, he humanizes the ancestral world of the babad chronicles, touching the audience both literally and metaphorically. |
