Description: |
One variety of Penasar Kelihan is mata nelik , or pop-eyed. This form of the mask was favored by the late, great topeng artist, I Nyoman Kakul of Batuan in the Gianyar District. Such a mask, leaning towards the grotesque and comic, is frequently used for the chief servant to the adversaries of the refined Dalem and his Ministers. This particular treatment of the Penasar Kelihan mask by Ida Bagus Alit is very reminiscent of Delem, the familiar braggart servant who serves the demonic adversaries of the heroes in Balinese wayang kulit (shadow play) performances based on the Mahabharata and Ramayana. |
