Description:

This mask could be used to represent any strong, vigorous warrior. One such character, important to the topeng chronicles, is Patih Jelantik. This sixteenth century hero of Dalem Batu Renggong's Court at Gelgel defeated the dreaded Dalem Bungkut of Nusa Penida and saved his father's soul while defending his king's honor by dying on the battlefield of Blambangan, East Java. Patih masks vary in their balance of strong (keras) and graceful (halus) elements, as indicated by the shape of the eye and the treatment of the mouth. They range in color from off-white, to various shades of tan and brown, to the choleric reddish hue used here by I Made Regug. A topeng dancer will chose an appropriate mask according to the stock he has available to him and his interpretation of the story.
