Description: |
This mask suggesting the head of a boar depicts the last King of the Pejeng dynasty, Dalem Bedaulu. He is portrayed as a powerful tyrant who had pre-empted the offerings and performances due to the gods. Embarrassed by the pig's head he obtained by overreaching his magic powers, he installed himself on a high platform and passed a law forbidding anyone to look up, lest they see his swinish face. He is finally defeated when Gajah Mada looks him in the eye while eating, causing the King to consume himself in the flames of his own anger. The mask can also be used for other characters portrayed as powerful and demonic, even such human adversaries as the Dalem of Blambangan. |
