Description: |
The Pendeta (in Indonesian) or Pedanda (in Balinese) mask is used for the high priests that figure in many topeng stories. Not always comic, the mask appears frequently in topeng pajegan performances to explain the meaning and import of various ceremonies. Ida Bagus Gelodog is credited with developing this version with an open mouth to allow for direct speech. In the bondres portion of a performance, such a mask might represent a garrulous priest whose bell is taken for that of a vendor of shaved ice. |
