These masks are used in portraying characters and situations drawn from the stories centering around the legendary Javanese prince Panji and his love, Candra Kirana. Both men and woen dance in this tradition and it is customary for the performance to dance first without the mask, placing the mask in front of the face and biting on to a leather thong to hold it in place only once the character has been established.
