Description:

The most widespread of several carved wooden animal heads appended to elaborate animal costumes and used for exorcistic purposes in Bali, the Barong Ket - a fanciful composite figure, part dragon and part lion- is danced by two men. It resides in the temple of the dead, is honored at Balinese temple ceremonies, and is paraded yearly. It also is featured in various dance dramas and ritual enactments (See photo), done both for tourists and in exorcistic rites, and is frequently pitted against another exorcistic figure, known most often as Rangda. Note: ten white silk flowers should be used, eight in two rows in the human hair beard and two over the ears.
