It represents fantastic beast from the wilderness and from the past and is traditionally worn in mid-february during agricultural and fertility rites, originally designed to hasten and welcome the coming of spring. More recently, these masks have been incorporated into carnival festivities celebrated during this period of time and similar to those found in much of central Europe. Groups of young man run through the streets and villages with these masks and drive out the devil in comic performances.
