Description:

The Kofi Karikari mask is of life size 7"x5". It represents the head of a vanquished strong and notorious chief. It wears beard which portrarys chieftaincy. On the upper lip, in the two corners of the mouth are two "Sepors" - sharp knief - like instruments specially made to clamp down the lip, piercing through the tounge so that the vanquished did not utter any curses or incantations when being be-headed. No pupils of the eyes. It was found in the treasury of Kofi Karikari, king of the Ashanti Kingdom (Gold Coast), Ghana. (1867-1874). This mask is hung on the king's stool, commemorates a victory over an enemy chief in the battle.
