Meghdoot (Cloud messenger). A ballet inspired by Kalidasa's Lyric Poem. The romantic love life of Yaksha and Yakshini and their cruel pangs of separation has been depicted in this dance drama. Yaksha was inattentive to his duties, being infatuated with his beautiful bride, and incurs the displeasure of Kuvera his lord and master who banishes him (for one year) to live without his beloved at Ramgir. The Yaksha in heart rendering sorrow of separation from his beloved invokes the cloud to carry his message of love and promise of reunion to the Yakshini in Alkapuri where suffering the pangs of separation she dwells with her hand maidens. The 'Digangan' have been brought in to the picture to emphasise the partition of two scenes simultaneously one at Ramgir and the other at Alkapuri. In Kalidas's Meghdoot there is no indication of meeting between Yaksha and Yakshini. However, liberty has been taken in this ballet by depicting a reunion in a dream sequence, the ecstasy of love. |
