Description: |
Represents Bakwas, the wild man of of the woods (literal translation from Kwakwala 'man of the ground embodiment'). This spirit man is the chief of the ghosts and lives deep in the forest where he consumes rotten wood and insects from the forest floor. He has a skeletal appearance with sharp protruding cheekbones and a grimacing mouth which reveal his teeth. He is diminutive creature, covered with green hair and can leap through the forest in five metre bounds. When travellers lost in the forest encounter Bakwas he serves them what appears to be dried salmon, this food is actually rotten wood. Upon eating this fare they immediately turn into ghosts, unable to return to the mortal world. |
