The mask of an upright hero in a play based on the historical fiction, The Romance of Three Kingdoms. The source story was written in the 14th Century or 15th Century CE based on historical records and is traditionally attributed to Luo Guanzhong. Its 120 chapters deal with events from the Yellow Tuban rebellion in 184 CE to the unification of "the three kingdoms" under the Jin Dynasty in 280 CE. Zhang Fei is the sworn brother to the story's central character, Liu Bei, last emperor of the Han Dynasty. After taking part in many campaigns he is assassinated in his sleep by treacherous subordinates.
