The animal masks in Anshun Earth opera date back to the exorcistic origins of the form. The animal represented here is a fanciful combination of mountain lion and camel - a figure that appears in the novel Fengshen Bang Yanyi. The eyes give a particularly striking impression, conveying a dreadful force. The decoratiions on the helmets and ear wings are among the most intringing aspects of the Anshum Earth-Opera Masks.
