Mask of Shiknidhal, a malevolent diety of the Desi and the Polias. It is a mask with peculiar features of its own. It is elongated in shape. Its head region is completely covered by a head gear consisting of two parts - a horizontally extended basal circular band which supports the vertically extended triangular shaped pointed multicoloured structure with a smaller semilunar shaped structure in the middle. Facial feature is characterised by a more or less broad forehead with a eye shaped symbolic drawing in the middle along the median line. Broad eyes are fully expanded. Sharp and pointed nose with a ridge along the median line. Lips are widely separated exposing the teeth of both the jaws. Widely open oral cavity. No opening in the eye region. Dancer looks through this oral opening. Red coloured zone across the oral cavity. Beautifully carved enlarged wing like structures constitutes the ears. Body colour : Black. Yellow coloured dots used in decorating the facial part with special reference to the forehead, cheek etc. |
