This is a mask of a warrior central to the story of Jiepai Pass from The Complete Story of the Western Expedition; it has also provided the basis for a Beijing Opera script. Su Baotong is the garrison commander at Jiepai Pass, who herocally fends off an attack from the forces of Tang Dynasty Emperor, Taizong. In Beijing Opera, he is a "painted face" general, with an elaborate black, white, and red "broken flower" design. This simpler treatment also shows his war-like spirit and resolve.
