Craft Incubation Projects For more details

During the Pilot Phase (2021-2022), ABCD worked on diverse ways of development and promotion of craft forms. This involved exemplary showcase of successful case studies of crafts from the design sector, awareness about GI certified crafts, exhibition of exclusive traditional artifacts and design interventions. The approach was all- inclusive resulting in giving a platform to rare and languishing craft forms practised across India.

ABCD successfully collaborated with various acclaimed designers and esteemed organisations along with a talented cohort of master artisans for specific craft-based incubation ateliers at the Red Fort. Each project and related design intervention were meticulously planned to address specific needs of the craft form and the cluster. During the course of the project involving three months at the Centre, artisans partnered with designers to co-create an exclusive range of marketable products along with a strong focus on co-learning and two-way knowledge transfer. The craft incubation projects undertaken at ABCD during the first phase were Camel Belt Braiding from Gujarat, Sholapith from West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh Leather Puppetry, Bhavani Jamakkalam from Tamil Nadu, Nettle Yarn from Uttarakhand and Ganjifa Card Making from Odisha.

They involved partnering with celebrated designers and artists across country. Along with independent designers, established institutions such as National Institute of Design and Kalakshetra Foundation creatively exhibited their extraordinary stories about interventions with craft forms such as Kalamkari Painting, Masulipatnam Block Printing, Pattu Peethambaram Weaving, Screw Pine Weaving, Papier Mache, Glass work and Longpi Black Pottery.

Aatmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design is now commencing Phase-II of craft incubation at the Red Fort. Specific projects have been selected based on thorough evaluation of proposals received from organisations with extensive experience in working with craft clusters.
