सुनीति कुमार चटर्जी (1890 – 1977) एक प्रख्यात बहुभाषाविद् थीं। व्याख्यान इस प्रसिद्ध भाषाविद और कला की जानकार के सम्मान में शुरू किया गया।

अंतर्राष्ट्रीय ख्यातिप्राप्त भाषावैज्ञानिक एवं उच्चकोटि के विद्वान प्रो. सुनीति कुमार चटर्जी (1809-1977) ने लंदन यूनिवर्सिटी, यूके तथा फ्रांस के सॉर्बोन यूनिवर्सिटी में भारोपीय भाषाविज्ञान, बंगाली भाषा के उद्भव और विकास, स्लाव एवं ऑस्ट्रो-एशियायी भाषाविज्ञान विषयों पर अध्ययन एवं शोध किया। वह कम से कम तीन दर्जन प्राचीन और आधुनिक, भारतीय और विदेशी भाषाओं को जानते थे। एक भाषाविद के रूप में, अपनी प्रतिष्ठा के अतिरिक्त वह बंगाली साहित्य, भारतीय आदिवासी संस्कृति, एशिया की कला और संस्कृति के विशेषज्ञ थे। अंग्रेजी, बंगाली और हिंदी में एक सफल लेखक के रूप में उनके प्रसिद्ध कार्यों में से कुछ इस प्रकार हैं: ऑरिजिन एंड डवलपमेंट ऑफ बंगाली लैग्वेंज (बंगाली भाषा का मूल और विकास) (अंग्रेजी में), बांग्ला भाषातत्वर भूमिका (बंगाली में), भारत संस्कृति कीर्त जनाकृती तथा आर्यभाषा और हिन्दी (हिन्दी में)। सुदूर पूर्वी देशों के लिए वह रवीन्द्रनाथ टैगोर के साथ जुड़े और बंगाली द्वीपमय भारत में अपने रमणीय कार्य में क्षेत्र की महान सांस्कृतिक विरासत के अपने अनुभवों को दर्ज किया।

प्रो. चटर्जी ने कई महत्वपूर्ण पदों पर भी कार्य किया। वह 1964 में राष्ट्रीय प्रोफेसर बने। उन्हें 1956 में भारत सरकार द्वारा गठित संस्कृत आयोग का अध्यक्ष नियुक्त किया गया था। अपनी इस क्षमता से उन्होनें एक रिपोर्ट तैयार की जिसमें साहित्य और इतिहास दोनों हैं। वे सन् 1961 के दौरान बंगिय साहित्य परिषद, कोलकाता के अध्यक्ष भी थे और सन् 1968-1972 साहित्य अकादमी के अध्यक्ष थे। प्रो. चटर्जी अपने विश्वकोश ज्ञान, एक बार देख कर याद रखने की क्षमता और मानव सभ्यता के बारे में उत्सुक जिज्ञासा के कारण अपने समय के प्रसिद्ध व्यक्ति थे।

इस प्रख्यात भाषाविद और कला-पारखी के सम्मान में स्मारकीय व्याख्यान (मेमोरियल लेक्चर) शुरू किया गया।

Prof. Suniti Kumar Chatterjee had been a multidisciplinary scholar, philologist, a connoisseur of art and a confluence of world culture. Prof. Bose has studied at Presidency , Kolkata and Cambridge and then taught and worked in the United States since the mid 1980s. He is also a Member of India’s Parliament from the Jadavpur Constituency in West Bengal
