त्रिशूर

The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts – IGNCA’s Regional Centre for Kerala is at Thrissur. Thrissur is the cultural capital of Kerala and therefore, to have a regional centre of IGNCA at Thrissur is very apt.

The etymology of the word Thrissur comes from Thiru-Shiva-Per-Ur, which is short for “a city with three temples of Lord Shiva,” and is pronounced “Thrissur.” At some point of time, it was also called Trichur which was created from the word Thrissur.

It is renowned for its holy places and vibrant festivities. The mural-covered Vadakkumnathan Temple, which is devoted to Lord Shiva, is located in the middle. A short distance away is the beautiful, Indo-Gothic Our Lady of Dolours Basilica. Elephants can be found at Thiruvambady Temple, which lies to the north. A bronze statue collection and antique coins may be found in the Sakthan Thampuran Palace’s archaeology museum. Ayurveda is equally prominent in this locality and the in-depth knowledge on this stream of traditional medicines and practices can be traced around the region.

The Poorams (temple festivities) are from the region of Thrissur. The neighbourhood is renowned for its historic mosques, churches, and temples. The most vibrant temple festival in Kerala is Thrissur Pooram. Thrissur, is notable for promoting traditional Keralan performing arts, religious sites, the Thrissur Pooram festival, the Onam festival, and the Vadakkumnathan Temple celebrations are prominent. The world famous spiritually significant ancient city of Guruvayur, which is about 27 kms away from Thrissur, is easily commutable. Kochi (Cochin) which is about 85 kms away from Thrissur is also easily accessible.

With Thrissur being a true example of unity in diversity, embracing the many cultures peacefully and aesthetically, the IGNCA RC at Thrissur is proud to be instrumental in working towards preservation, promotion and propagation of the local arts, traditions and culture. The office has a strategic location which is in the central part of this town. At 3 mins walkable distance from the ancient Vadakkumnathan Temple, and opposite to Shri Adi Shankaracharya Math (Thekke Madhom), the R.C. Thrissur which has wonderful artistic traditional mural paintings, is a lovely office to explore the many arts and Vedic studies from around.

Since its inception in 2018, the core of the regional centre of IGNCA at Thrissur has its core idea to focus on the Vedic Parampara and performing studies. Since its inception, R.C. Thrissur has conducted a number of events, concerts, workshops, public lectures, in the field of Vedic studies, Fine Arts, Performing Arts, Preventive Conservation, Manuscripts, and Literature, bringing forth the relevance of traditional knowledge systems into the contemporary scenario.
