IGNCA at the 9th JDCA Film Festival, Bhubaneswar:

9th Film Festival of Jatin Das Centre for Art (JDCA) was held on 16th, 17th and 18th January 2015 at Bhubaneswar. Focus of the festival was on making of art – the process. About 30 films were screened in the festival including “Painter’s Sketchbook” by M.F Hussain, animation films, “Printed Rainbow” and “Blue” by Gitanjali Rao, “Making of Firaaq” by Nandita Das, “To let the World In” by Avijit Mukul Kishore and “Shazia Sikander” by Susan Sollins among others. The scope of the festival was enlarged by presentations of documentaries on arts and crafts traditions such as the Vishwakarma craft of wood carving, clay idol making, traditional textiles and palm leaf fans made by Alekh Baba monastic community and so on.

The three-day festival concluded with the screening of the IGNCA production, “The Magic of Making”, film on the legendary artist K.G Subramanyan, directed by Goutam Ghose.

Workshops by documentary filmmakers and performing artists and display of local arts and crafts were part of the festival. IGNCA had put up a stall of DVDs and publications at the venue.

Film Circle screening of Mudiyettu and Kalamezhuthum Pattum

Mudiyettu is one of the richest ritualistic traditions of Kerala. Since the hoary past, people performed Mudiyettu as a celebration of winning over the evil with mythological story line. Ritualistically, sacred space is created by the ancient drawings of Kalamrtyam, an image of a deity, symbolizing creation itself. The songs, ritualistic performance, and the effacing of the drawings have been documented in this film

Film Circle screening of SIDIS OF GUJARAT

Director : Beheroze Shroff, Duration : 53 minutes

Sidis, Indians of African descent came to India via different routes and from different countries of origin, from the 13th century onwards. Contemporary African descended communities in India mostly refer to themselves as Sidis. In Gujarat, Sidis trace their genealogy to ancestral saint Bava Gor whose name is chanted in Sidi songs and dances. Sidis maintain a distinctive culture. This film documents some aspects of the culture and traditions and diverse histories of migration of the Sidis of Gujarat.

Film Circle screening of Mirasans of Punjab - Born to Sing

Director : Shikha Jhingan Duration : 49 minutes

The film nostalgically traverses the unique tradition of the Punjab, in which the Mirasans cry on death, bring laughter at birth and marriage and bridge communities. Today, children of Mirasans are struggling to survive with dwindling patronage and are moving out from family space to public space.

FILM CIRCLE SCREENING of `HE SWAM AGAINST THE COLONIAL CURRENT’

The documentary highlights the significant contribution of Tamil Film Director K. Subrahmanyam to the Indian Cinema. He made Nationalist films and advocated social renaissance & reforms through his films. The documentary uses excerpts from his available films out of about 22 titles that he directed between 1934 and 1957.

The documentary traces the journey of legendary artist Gulab Bai, who was perhaps the first female actress to join the male-dominated NAUTANKI . A self-trained artist, from a humble farmer family of Balpora, was an adept actress,gifted with a sweet voice.She was honored with Padma Shri and Sangeet natak Akademi Award, among other awards in recognition of her significant work.

Thang-Ta - Martial Art of Manipur THANG-TA (IGNCA’S INTANGIBLE HERITAGE SERIES) by Shri Aribam Syam Sharma, Duration: 25 minutes 24 seconds

Manipuri martial art is called Thang-Ta (sword and spear). It is dedicated to fighting skill and worship. The Meitei creation of Thang-Ta goes back to antiquity. Ashiba was asked to create the Universe by his father Atngkok Shitaba. The movement and pattern of creation, ritualistically known as Thengou, was revealed in human movement patterns of Thang-Ta. Today Thang-Ta has passed into oblivion, and survives in isolation. The film traces elements of this art against the blend of martial and spiritual elements in the psyche of the Manipuri people.

Film Circle screening of “Ustad Asad Ali Khan- A Portrait”

Director : Renuka George Duration : 70 minutes followed by Question and Answer session with Director.

This is a documentary film on Asad Ali Khan Khan (1937-2011), the eminent instrumentalist of Jaipur Beenkar gharana. Asad Ali was privileged to have a great family heritage, which boasted of legendary instrumentalists like Rajab Ali Khan, Musharraf Khan and Sadiq Ali Khan. He was one of the very few musicians to practice rudravina, an instrument now almost extinct.

The documentary takes us from Rampur, where his father was a court musician, to New Delhi where he lived until his death in June 2011. He shares with us the complexities of practicing this rare instrument. We get a glimpse of what life must have been like in the court days, and how the artistes of that generation dedicated themselves to their art. The artist plays at home for us, sharing his music generously and intimately.

IGNCA Film Circle :” Kissa – A Tradition of Punjab”

Watch this docudrama to have fair knowledge of life and culture of Punjabis and their literature. Kissa – may be called a romantic ballad or a Masnavi in Persian, is a tragic story of love, velour, betrayal, passion, adventure etc, which is an important part of Punjabi literature. The literary genre, which dates back to medieval times, has been much popular in the Punjab. Besides reference to the main Kissas, like Heer-Ranjha, Sohini- Mahiwal, watch the brief enactment of “Sassi–Pannu”, written by Hashim Shah.

India has a great tradition of paintings.Important artistic Centres got established in Tanjavur, Nathdwara (Rajasthan) and Vrindavan (Uttar Pradesh) and other parts of the country over the centuries. A distinctive feature of this painting tradition is the use of Gold leafs in the mythological and other contemporary works. The documentary explores this tradition of Indian paintings.

Indonesian Movie Screening.

On the occasion of the Independence day of Indonesia, The Indonesian embassy is screening two Indonesian documentaries on 13 and 14 August, 2014.

On 13th August, 2014 Habibie and Ainun Duration : Two Hours
The movie depicts a true love story of the third Indonesian President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie (Habibie) and his beloved wife Hasri Ainun Habibie (Ainun). Habibie and Ainun were class mates in school. They met again in Indonesia upon Habibie’s returned from Germany for a temporary sick leave. On their first meeting at Ainun’s house in Bandung, they instantly fell in love. Their love journey continued when Habibie returned to Germany in order to pursue his studies in Aachen as well as when he was called by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia to serve his country in the field of technology, aircraft industry and then politics. His ultimate services were to be CEO in Indonesia’s aircraft enterprise. Minister of Research and Technology, Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, and President of the Republic of Indonesia. Along Habibie’s outstanding career journey and dedication to Indonesia. Ainun was his loyal and loving partner and soul mate who was always there for him to provide endless support. The journey ended when Ainun became gravely ill and finally passed away. Habibie and Ainun’s love has been built on the journey to pursue their dreams. For Habibie, Ainun was his everything. She became the eyes to oversee his wife. For Ainun, Habibie had been her everything whom could fill love in her life. Every story has an end, every dream has a limit. Yet, Habibie and Ainun’s love never ended.

Abstract of the film: Border tells the story of Jaleswari, an ambitious and assertive woman who as assigned by her office from Jakarta to the rural area of Kalimantan located at the border of Malaysia and Indonesia to promote education to the local people. Her assignment was the promote education to the local people. Throughout her time in the rural area, she faced emotional battle when her vision to promote education was challenged by the values of local tradition and culture. This is a story of Jaleswari’s struggle for a better life of the people of Kalimantan through education, It also depicts her journey to introduce program to the people of Kalimantan without alienating them from their traditions and culture.

IGNCA Film Circle : "Zohra Unmasked"

Join us as we pay homage to one of the most inspiring trailblazers; Zohra Sehgal. Zohra Sehgal went to Queen Mary College, Lahore at a time when strict purdah was still observed. She followed her heart, become a dancer; went to Germany and got a three year diploma in dancing. In the documentary, she shares about her training in expressing the consciousness of one’s body. On her return, she joined the dancing school of Uday Shanker. She joined the theatre group of Prithvi Raj Kapoor and worked with him for fifteen years, and even acted in films with him. The personality of this great danseuse, actress and the theatre person is unveiled by Dr.Kapila Vatsyayan – the well known visionary of art and culture.

FILM SCREENING > Pavakathakali (Glove Puppets of Kerala) Duration – 56 min.

Origin of Pavakathakali or Puppet Kathakali is attributed to the Andippandaram community,an itinerant group who travelled from Andhra Pradesh and settled in Kerala. They performed puppetry as they moved from village to village for their livelihood. When Kathakali became popular in the eighteenth century, they began to dress up their puppets in Kathakali costumes and make up and also adapted attakatha, the text of Kathakali, creating a new form of puppetry called Pavakathakali. This 56 minute long presentation traces the history; the challenges the art form has faced in various phases of its existence and the present day efforts to rejuvenate it in the rustic setting in Kerala.

The state’s history is rich so is the culture equally vibrant. Many people prefer church marriages, “Dhol-Cholom”, Rāsalīlā is a real treat to the eyes. People enjoy their life through various games.
A land of rich handicrafts, art of making pottery, special dolls, and handlooms needs a special mention. Although Imphal has become much more advanced, the small villages and towns still maintain the traditional values and the ways of life.
