Safa Hor (Safa meaning clean and Hor meaning man) is a movement which began in the year 1868 by the Santhals of Santhal Pargana. The men of the community have long hair, empty bodied with white dhoti, rosary of Tulsi and Rudraksh around the neck. The women wear their hair open, their attire is white sari and tulsi rosary is tied around their head. The choruses of expressive songs and the chanting of ‘Ramo Naam’ are integral part of their culture.

With a display of layered narration, (often beginning with introductory songs to accompany a sequence of unfolding events) these scrolls have an intrinsic flavour of local oral history.
