IGNCA collaborated with the Times International Folk Festival 2014 . A special exhibition of Phulkari and Gond paintings from the IGNCA collection was arranged and this was widely appreciated.

On 21st June 2014, the Raja Deen Dayal exhibition was inaugurated at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) NGMA by noted historian Dr Ramachandra Guha. Mr. Sudhakar Rao, Dr Himani Pande, Mr KG Kumar, Director NGMA and Mr. Vikram Sampath participated. The Exhibition is on for a month till 20th July 2014 and opens on all days except Mondays.

In the month of June, the SRC organized an exhibition titled ‘Brhadiswara: the Monument and the Living Tradition’ based on nearly 2 deca des of research and documentation done at IGNCA on this 1000 year old architectural marvel and UNESCO World Heritage site.

The exhibition was inaugurated by His Excellency Dr. H R Bhardwaj, Governor of Karnataka on 13th June 2014 at the Venkatappa Art Gallery. Smt Veena Joshi, Joint Secretary IGNCA, Dr. R Nagaswamy, historian and project coordinator and Mr. Vikram Sampath, Executive Director, IGNCA-SRC participated. The interactive multimedia DVD pack on the Temple was also inaugurated.

The five day workshop on Natyasastra was organised by World Dance Alliance –Karnataka Chapter from 9th April to 13th April, 2014. This workshop was conducted by the renowned Scholar, Musicologist, Sanskritist and Dance expert DR. Pappu Venugopala Rao from Chennai.

‘HASE a traditional folk art reflect the joy of life’ well known historian Prof. S. Settar said at inauguration function of 2 days’ workshop at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts South Regional Centre, Bangalore.

‘Madhubani and Tajore’ art forms have gained popularity world wise, however it is an antrorising fact that HASE art which is native of Karnataka has not received the recognition and popularity. This art work usually made by the rural folk women’s.

Katha Keertana (Harikatha) is a composite art form comprising storytelling, poetry, music and philosophy. It involves narration of Puranic, intermingled with songs. Usually the narration involves numerous sub-plots and anecdotes, which are used to highlight the main story. The story teller is assisted by one or more co-singers, who elaborate the songs and a mrudangam/tabala and harmonium serve as accompanist. The story teller uses a pair of symbols to keep the beat.

This workshop organized by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Southern Regional Centre, Bengaluru aimed at encouraging and preserving hase a traditional folk art form began at . The workshop commenced greeting the artists resident in villages in Sagar Taluk present here for a weeklong period. At the inauguration present were Vijay Vaman talking to the artist on hase, he discussed The question and discussion series began on a note by Vijay Vaman saying, rural and urban people understand soil in different ways. Rural, is where people are close to soil in their daily affairs. Proceeding on hase, he questioned all, can hase be taken further from manual hand painting to incorporate applications like facebook, photoshop or with the use instagram?..

The circulating exhibition titled ‘The World of Rock Art’, concluded it journey at Bengaluru’s National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA). An exhibition titled ‘The World of Rock Art’ was organized by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), in collaboration with NGMA and Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) . This exhibition is a part of the IGNCA’s ongoing project called Adi Drishya. The inauguration of the exhibition on December 3, 2013, took place in the presnce Dr. A Sundara, Retd. Professor, Department of Ancient History & Archaeology, Karnataka University, Dharwad, Shri Pravin Srivastava, (IAS), Director General, Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi. K. G. Kumar, Director, National Gallery of Modern Art and Professorr. S Settar, Director(Hon) at IDNCA Southern Regional Centre, Bengaluru, the staff of the ASI, NGMA and IGNCA,SRC.

Kanaka Dasa (1509-1609) was a great poet, philosopher, musician and composer. He is known for his Kirtanas and Ugabhoga compositions in the Kannada language. Like other Dasas, he often used colloquial language in his compositions. He was a follower of Dvaita philosophy.

He joined Haridasa movement and became a follower of Vyasaraya who named him Kanakadasa. His poems and kritis deal with the futility of external rituals. Similar to Purandara Daasa, Kanaka Daasa’s compositions expose social evils. His poem “Kula kula kula vendu hodedhada dhiri”, asks not to segregate oneself from other on account of caste, because every human is born in the same way

Beleyur is a remote village near Sagara town in Shimoga District, about 479 km from Bangalore. This village reverberates with Chande (drum beat) every evening. Peasants engaged in agricultural activities gather together and practice a rare kind of Yakshagana or Talamaddale under the umbrella ‘Sri Mahaganapati Yakshagana Kala Mandali’ which is about 150 years of history.

This programme was arranged in collaboration with the IGRMS, Bhopal. Besides an exhibition on rock art, a workshop was held in which students from Visual Art College participated. A discourse was held on 14th with Prof. S. Settar in the Chair. Prof.A.Sundara, Prof.Kori Shettar, Dr. Venkatasubbaiah and Dr.Chandramouli participated.

Tala-Maddale is an ancient form of art practiced in the coastal regions of Karnataka and northern Kerala. It is now very popular in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Shimoga districts of Karnataka and Kasaragod district of Kerala.

A typical Tala-Maddale show consists of veteran artists sitting in a circular fashion along with a Bhagavata (the singer, with “Tala” or pair of small hand cymbals) and a “Maddale” (a type of drum) player. Artists assume the characters depicted in the story, typically, from Ramayana, Mahabharata, and other puranas. The show is a superb presentation of oratorial skills.

Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts and Ranjini Kalakendra (R) Bangalore, jointly organzed Weekend-workshop on Nruthyabhinaya (Bharathanatya) between 27 July 2013 and 18 August 2013.

IGNCA SRC organized a lecture on Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy on 28th March 2013 at Kuvempu Auditorium, Kannada Sahitya Parishath, Bangalore. Mr. Lakshmeesha Tolpadi spoke on Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy’s works and vision. Prof. S. Settar, Director (Hon.) IGNCA SRC chaired. Scholars from various institutions, colleges and students attended the function.

A National Seminar on Bhakti was organized on the 2nd March 2013 at VVS College for Women in co-ordination with the IGNCA SRC and Karnataka Sahithya Academy.Prof. S. Settar, Director (Hon.), IGNCA SRC, inaugurated the Seminar and the Principle of the college, Smt. Mangala Priyadarshini and Mr. Lakshmeesha Tolpadi were present on this occasion. Professor Krishnamurthy Hanur, G.B. Harish, O.L. Nagabhushanaswamy, P. Chandrika, K.G. Nagarajappa presented papers on various aspects of Bhakti and explained the role of Bhakti in Religion, day to day life, and its bearings on Spirituality and Rituals. The role of Women was also highlighted.

 IGNCA SRC, in coordination with VVS College for Women, Basaveshwaranagar and Yaksha Siri (R) organized Girija Kalyana Yakshagana on 2nd March 2013. Mayuri Upadhyaya, Geetha Hegde Salkani, Niharika Bhat, Mamatha G, Jyothi Nayak, Kanchika Bhat performed. It was directed by A.P. Patak. Ravindrabhat Achive, Srinivasa Prabhu were accompanists.

 Yakshagana, like a few other folk arts, is a male-dominated art form. Women have entered into this field recently. One such troop is Yaksha Siri group. On February 17, artistes from this group demonstrated Magadha Vadhe, an episode from the Mahabharata at Havyaka Mahasabha, Malleshwaram, Bangalore.

The Rangollasa, a traditional theatre festival, was organised at Bangalore 12-16, 2003. Artistes from four Southern states presented performances. Each performance was followed by a discussion. Ganjifa is a traditional form of playing cards known for their exquisite painting by artisans. The Ganjifa workshop-exhibition-sale was held at the Chitra Art Gallery during May 19-22, 2003. At present the SRC is developing a visual archive of Ganjifa cards as part of its archival documentation. The event was documented by Media Unit, IGNCA and telecast on DD Bharati. A national seminar on Dr. K. Shivarama Karanth’s contribution was in collaboration with the Sahitya Akademi (SRO) held on August 27, 2002. The papers presented by well-known scholars dealt with Karanth’s contribution to Yakshagana music, choreography, composers, costumes, and his experiments.
