Exhibition on Kantha Embroidery The Kantha is a special and beautiful art form developed mainly by the women of Bengal with great passion and love. The Kanthas are infact quilts prepared by layers of old cotton sarees joined together by darn stitches. The threads are drawn across the layers so close to one another that the entire field appears to be rippled. Once the field is prepared the coloured threads are taken out from the borders of the sarees for embroidering the field. The designs of embroidery are symbolic in character and have a close affinity to the alpana. The central design is usually a lotus with variable number of petals interspersed with diverse patterns. The most recurrent designs are tree of life, animals, birds, fish, mythological figures, boats, chariots kalkas etc. which are conventional and freely balanced. Venue: Twin Art Galleries, C.V. Mess, IGNCA, New Delhi , New Delhi |
