IGNCA Pays Tribute to Gandhiji…. Puppet Exhibition – October 1993

During Ist week of October 1993, IGNCA commemorated the Father of the Nation in the puppetry programme titled ‘Images of Truth’, by Shri Dadi Pudumjee of Ishara Puppet group. The show created a vivid, dramatic picture of important episodes from Mahatma Gandhi’s life through imaginative choreography combining puppetry, mask dance, mime and music. The first show was held on 2nd October in Gandhi Smriti and Gandhi Darshan at No. 5, Tees January Marg.

There were four more shows, at India International Centre on 6th and 9th October and at Modern School on 7th October. The show symbolically focused on Gandhiji’s values of truth, non-violence and compassion. The show was well received by the public and discerning critics. “The sensuousness of the puppeteer’s relation with his puppet/child merged into the tender, loving act of recovery that the show intended to undertake for Gandhi… Images of Truth brought a welcome freshness into a subject stated by the dutiful cliches that years of obeisance have generated”. (The Pioneer, October 12 1993).
