Guwahati Regional Center

 

IGNCA, Regional Centre, Guwahati is one of the nine Regional Centre’s of IGNCA and focuses on preservation, promotion and dissemination of the rich arts and culture of communities of North East India focusing on their traditional knowledge systems and world views.

North East India, comprising of eight (8) states, has diverse art and culture unique to each State and region. The entire area is home to many tribal groups and ethnic communities, each with its rich history of customs, traditions and life ways.

The Centre has been engaged in research and documentation of lesser-known and dying forms of art and culture from North East India. The Centre has thrived to engage with different universities, institutions, cultural organizations, groups, communities and tribes of the region through various cultural exchange programmes in the form of workshops, cultural performances, demonstrations, exhibitions, fairs and festivals etc. The Centre also organizes academic programs like field based research projects, documentations, seminars, lectures, symposiums, panel discussions, conferences etc. to provide a platform for dissemination of knowledge and raise awareness about the unique cultural heritage of the North East region.

IGNCA established its first project office specifically for North Eastern projects at Imphal, Manipur under Janapada Sampada Division. The project office was relocated to Gauhati University premises, Guwahati, Assam in 2001. The Regional Centre, Guwahati was inaugurated on 23rd December 2017 in the presence of Shri Narayan Chandra Devgoswami, Satradhikar, Natun Kamalabari Satra, Majuli, Assam and Padmashree Nritcharya Jatin Goswami, exponent of Satriya Art and Culture.

The major aims and objectives of Regional Centre Guwahati are as follows:

  • Study the different aspects of culture of the various communities and tribes of North East India particularly relating to their history, oral traditions, livelihood, wisdom, traditions, cosmology, world views and customs etc.
  • To document the folklore, indigenous belief system and folk traditions practiced by the tribal groups and other communities.
  • Archiving and documentation of traditional forms of art and architecture prevalent among the different groups of the region including lesser-known or dying art forms.
  • To collect and preserve various art and artefacts, tangible and intangible culture heritage pertaining to the region.

  • Exhibition of Basketry, Textiles of North East India and Photographic collections of Ishan Manthan event at Lokmanthan 2022
  • Festival of Films from Contemporary Northeast on “Borderland Narratives”
  • Outreach: Portraying the Culture of Northeast India: “Satriya Tradition of Assam and Raas Leela of Manipur”
  • Bookaroo: Festival of Children Literature,
