Molly Kaushal is Professor at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts. She is currently heading the Janapada Sampada Division of the centre devoted to the study of cultural heritage, folklore and lifestyle studies. She was trained in folkloristics at the Moscow State University, Moscow, where she defended her thesis on Russian and Punjabi Folklore. She has conceptualized and organized several national and international conferences, seminars and workshops on chanted narratives and other performative traditions of rural, tribal and diverse religious communities in India including Sikhism and Islam.

She has published several research papers and edited many books which include Chanted Narratives – The Living Katha Vachana Tradition; Folklore Public sphere and Civil Society, (co-edited with M.D. Muthukumarswamy); Journeys: Heroes, Pilgrims, Explorers (co-edited with Geeti Sen). Bhagat Vani : Confluence of Traditions (Co-edited with J.S. Neki and S.S. Noor) She has currently initiated three new projects at the IGNCA Rama Katha in Oral Narratives and Folk Performative Tradition of India; Aqeedat ke Rang: Expression of Devotion in Islam; Anhad Naad: Spiritual Musical Heritage of Punjab. She has also produced on E-book ‘Sanjhi : Ancestral Spaces Maiden Desire. (Folk Painting of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh).
