Film Circle screening of “Ustad Asad Ali Khan- A Portrait”

Director : Renuka George Duration : 70 minutes followed by Question and Answer session with Director.

This is a documentary film on Asad Ali Khan Khan (1937-2011), the eminent instrumentalist of Jaipur Beenkar gharana. Asad Ali was privileged to have a great family heritage, which boasted of legendary instrumentalists like Rajab Ali Khan, Musharraf Khan and Sadiq Ali Khan. He was one of the very few musicians to practice rudravina, an instrument now almost extinct.

The documentary takes us from Rampur, where his father was a court musician, to New Delhi where he lived until his death in June 2011. He shares with us the complexities of practicing this rare instrument. We get a glimpse of what life must have been like in the court days, and how the artistes of that generation dedicated themselves to their art. The artist plays at home for us, sharing his music generously and intimately.

Akhyan, an exhibition of masks, puppets and picture showmen in Indian narrative traditions by IGNCA is on display in Madrid, Spain at the Centro Dramatico Nacional (CDN), from 17th September to 12th October.

Akhyan which means a narrative or a story, explores and celebrates narrative traditions of India that tell a story through the use of speaking objects such as masks, puppets and pictures. It brings together these traditions not as museum pieces but as living forms of story-telling where the object is given life and projects its creator’s ideas and essence. It was first showcased in the IGNCA in 2010. In Spain, the exhibition will be held in two venues- Madrid and Tolosa.

The inaugural at CDN was attended by Mr. Miguel Ángel Recio, Director General of INAEM, Mr. Ernesto Caballero, Director of CDN, Ms. Elena Basagoitia, President of Centro de Iniciativas De Tolosa (CIT), and Ms. Idoya Otegui, Director of Tolosa Puppets International Center (TOPIC).
