Celebration of World Folklore Day: Essence of Oral Traditions as a Carrier of Culture

Jharkhand is a state in eastern India known for its pristine nature and boasts a rich cultural heritage that includes a diverse array of tribal and regional dance, folk songs, paintings, games, mythology, customs, rituals, handicrafts and fairs and festivals.

This lecture was organised to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, experiences and dissemination of the rich oral tradition of Jharkhand to young researchers and students. It also enhances the knowledge and encourages the young generations to undertake research on the rich cultural heritage of the state.

It was followed by the screening of documentary films on the origin of mankind and the creation of the universe according to the belief system of the Munda tribe and the Sohrai festival of the Santhal tribe.

Patriotic Songs in Regional Languages to commemorate the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign & Mera Maati Mera Desh

The event aimed to celebrate the diversity of Jharkhand’s regional languages while fostering a sense of unity through patriotic songs.

The event showcased a mesmerising array of performances, each highlighting the beauty and significance of different languages, mostly in Hindi and Nagpuri. Padma Shri Mukund Nayak and other artists from diverse linguistic backgrounds came together to pay homage to the nation’s unity in diversity. The stage was adorned with colourful decorations and representations of India’s cultural heritage.

Independence Day Celebration

The flag hoisting ceremony at the premises of Regional Centre, Ranchi was followed by Inter School and Inter Department Music, Dance and Painting Competition on 15th August 2023 at Aryabhatta Auditorium, Ranchi University, Ranchi. Dr. Ajit Kumar Sinha, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Ranchi University graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Shri Ashish Kumar Jha, Controller of Examination, Ranchi University; Padma Shri Mukund Nayak; Prof. Pratul Saraswati; Dr Smriti Singh, OSD, Ranchi University; Prof. Kamal Kumar Bose, Former HoD, Dept of Hindi, St. Xavier’s College; Prof. Binod Kumar, HoD, Dept of Khortha, Ranchi and Dr Hari Oraon, HoD, Dept of Tribal & Regional Languages, Ranchi University were present on the occasion. Students from St. Thomas School, DAV Bariatu, DAV Gandhinagar, DAV Nandraj, LEBB High School, Balika Shiksha Bhawan and the Department of Performing & Fine Arts, Ranchi University participated in the competition. The performances were followed by the Prize distribution ceremony.

Street Play to commemorate Har Ghar Tiranga campaign & Mera Maati Mera Desh

On 14th August 2023 at Oxygen Park, Morabadi, Ranchi, Nukkad Natak titled ‘August Kranti’ was presented to depict and educate people about historical events like the Quit India Movement, which was a significant step towards India’s independence which took place in August 1942 during the British colonial rule.

Tribal Drum Circle to commemorate Har Ghar Tiranga campaign & Mera Maati Mera Desh

The Har Ghar Tiranga Celebration commenced with the Tribal Drum Circle at Akhra, Oxygen Park, Ranchi where 15 Dhamsa and Mandar players presented an energetic jam of indigenous percussion instruments, cheering “Bharat Mata Ki Jay”. The masses encouraged the artists and also participated by dancing to their rhythmic beats.

The Tiranga Rangoli Competition at the premises of Aryabhatta Auditorium, Ranchi University, Ranchi was organised on 13th August 2023. Dr. Ajit Kumar Sinha, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Ranchi University and Dr. Smriti Singh, OSD, Ranchi University graced the occasion. Shri Praween Karmakar, Senior Artist, Ranchi was the Judge of the contest.

The talented students from the Department of Performing and Visual Arts, Ranchi University participated in the competition manifesting patriotism through their art.

IGNCA Regional Centre, Ranchi mounted an exhibition of Sohrai, Kohbar and Payatkar paintings from the archives of Regional Centre, Ranchi during the World Anthropology Congress 2023 held at Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), Bhubaneswar organised by United Indian Anthropology Forum (UIAF)in collaboration with Utkal University, Sambalpur University and Delhi University. More than 1,000 scholars from India and abroad attended the Congress.
