 Course Objective

The study of textile and different weaves is very important today. It involves both scientific and traditional knowledge and skills which integrate the development, acquisition and promotion of textiles, weaves and fabrics transformed through historical references, rituals, folk beliefs and practices among various communities in different geographical and cultural clusters of India. Studying the textiles tradition provides an in depth understanding of the origin, history and evolution of textiles, material, fibres, yarns, and fabrics. It can help to impart knowledge to students of this craft and end uses.

The course proposes to cover different segments such as:

  • Origin, History and Evolution of Textiles
  • Early History and Textile Tradition in India
  • Textiles in Ancient and Medieval Period
  • Khadi and Growth of the Indian Textiles Pre- and Post-Independence
  • Basic techniques, styles, motifs and functions associated with folk belief and Practices of different communities.
  • Earlier trade, cultural exchange and influence with other countries.
  • Role in Development and Relation with South Asian Textiles.
  • Textile making Communities and Artisans with Historic Lineages and legacies that has an Impact on contemporary designs practices.

 

The course is designed for enthusiasts who want to learn about India’s textile heritage. The course shall include series of audio-visual and illustrated material to provide insights into various stages of textile making technique and trace historical trajectories and clusters of textile traditions to relate it with visual cultures such as art, craft, weaving, paintings etc. which will enable the students to learn about the textile evolution from the ancient to the contemporary period, adopting a thematic approach to an expansive history.
