Conservation Division of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) was formed in 2003 with a very basic setup. The Division specializes in the areas of preventive conservation, conservation training, conservation of books, manuscripts, paintings, and objects (metals, wooden objects, ethnographic objects, etc). Conservation Division also undertakes research and documentation projects in the field of cast iron objects and rust converters.

For the last 10 years IGNCA, has been making efforts to modernize its conservation laboratory in terms of infrastructure, equipment and training of its human resource. The Laboratory has qualified conservators drawn from National Museum Institute, National Research Laboratory of Conservation of Cultural Property (NRLC), Delhi Institute of Heritage Research and Management, and Aligarh Muslim University.

The laboratory is very particular in following well established principles of conservation. All the treatments done in the Lab are based on the principle of minimum intervention and reversibility.

The Division has collaborations with several institutions in India and abroad. At present, it is considered the finest conservation laboratory in the country.
