During the course of the project, teams comprising textile designers, historians, sociologists, photographers and videographers spent two months on field and conducted a holistic study of their traditional textiles; which included documenting fibres, fabrics, looms, tools, weaving techniques and dyeing methods, and also narratives, myth, migration stories, and unique socio-cultural practices of the indigenous communities. Exhibition of some rare photographs of Dr. Rashid Jahan. The book ‘A Rebel and Her Cause: The Life and Work of Rashid Jahan’ has emerged out of the research by Rakhshanda Jalil, carried out under the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts programme on Confluence of Traditions and Composite Cultures. Dr. Rashid Jahan (1905- 1953) was a multifaceted personality: a doctor, a dedicated member of the Communist Party and one of the founding members of the Progressive Writers Movement. The aim of the project was to revisit Dr. Jahan’s legacy and its contribution to the making of India’s composite cultures. In a remarkably perceptive and richly detailed account of this pioneering woman, Rakhshanda Jalil offers the readers an unusual document: a warm and informed biography based on archival material, extensive interviews and critical commentaries together with fine translations of Rashid Jahan’s best known stories and plays.
