This two-volume set brings together for the first time the collected works of Debi Prasanna Pattanayak, the eminent Indian linguist and humanist, whose discourse on language has greatly influenced India’s language policies. These essays are a collection of Pattanayak’s writings and speeches over several decades. They bring to the reader the profundity of his scholarship and his understanding of the dynamics of language(s) in India. Through these writings, one can see how Pattanayak has sought to make his readers aware of the inherent multilingual nature of the Indian society and make them realize that this should be seen as an asset and strength and that we should not to turn to the West for solutions that are alien to the country. Though Pattanayak is often critical of the monolingual paradigm and western perspectives, his liberal worldview does not shut any language out Venue: Lecture Room, 11 Mansingh Road, New Delhi , New Delhi |
