बच्चों के प्रति बुद्ध का अनुराग सर्वविदित है। दो सोपकों, चुल्लपंथक, दब्बमल्लपुत्र और कुमार कस्सप की कथाएँ उपर्युक्त मान्यता के परिचायक हैं।

एक बार श्रावस्ती की एक महिला संघ में प्रवेश करने को आतुर थी किन्तु उसके माता-पिता ने उसे भिक्षुणी बनने की अनुमति नहीं दी और उसका विवाह एक श्रेष्ठी से करा दिया। कालांतर में उसने अपने पति से अनुमति लेकर भिक्षुणी बन संघ में प्रवेश किया।

उसके संघ-प्रवेश के कुछ दिनों के बाद यह विदित हुआ कि वह गर्भिणी थी। जब देवदत्त को उसकी गर्भावस्था की सूचना मिली तो उसने बिना जाँच-पड़ताल किए ही उस भिक्षुणी को 'चरित्रहीन' कहा। जब वह बात बुद्ध के कानों में पड़ी तो उन्होंने उपालि और विशाखा को जाँच-पड़ताल के लिए श्रावस्ती भेजा। उन लोगों ने पूरी जाँच-पड़ताल के पश्चात् यह पाया कि महिला निर्दोष थी। वह बच्चा उसके पति का ही था।

जब महिला ने पुत्र को जन्म दिया तो बुद्ध ने शिशु को आशीर्वाद भी दिये और उसका नाम कुमार कस्सप रखा। उसकी देखभाल के लिए बुद्ध ने उसे श्रावस्ती नरेश को सौंप दिया। सात वर्षों तक वह बालक श्रावस्ती नरेश की देख-रेख में पलता रहा। तत: बुद्ध की कृपा से प्रवर्जित हो संघ में प्रविष्ट हुआ।

B uddhas fondness for children is well reflected by his care and attention as is evidenced by his care for the tots like the two Sopakas, Chulla Panthaka, Dabba Mallaputta, Kumara Kassapa and so on.

Once a woman wanted to join the Order of the Buddha; but was not allowed by her parents. So, she married a wealthy banker of Rajagaha; and in course of time succeeded in obtaining his permission to join the Sangha as a nun. But soon it was noticed that she was pregnant. Alarmed, some monks and nuns brought this matter to Devadatta, who in turn accused her of misconduct. Eventually, the matter was brought before the Buddha, who entrusted Upali to investigate into the matter. Upali conducted the enquiry with the help of Visakha and other residents of Savatthi and found her innocent. He then announced the truth in the court of Savatthi King.

When the nun delivered the baby, the Buddha blessed him. The baby, received the name Kumara Kassapa; and was reared by the king of Savatthi for seven years. Then he received his ordination at the age of seven.
